Reflection:
Nothing has distorted the beauty of God’s creation like the unchecked desires of man. From the garden of Eden to the news headlines of today, selfish cravings have led to broken homes, corrupted systems, exploited lands, and wounded souls. The Scriptures this morning are not just about legal commands or the tragic beheading of a prophet, they’re about how far-reaching the consequences of desire can be when it isn’t surrendered to God.
Leviticus invites us into a rhythm of rest and restraint, the Jubilee year reminding us that all things ultimately belong to God. We are only stewards, not owners. When we forget this, greed takes root. Then in Matthew, Herod’s lust and pride end in the silencing of truth and the death of John the Baptist. Evil always demands silence from the righteous.
Unchecked desires are dangerous because they grow in silence. They look small but feed on attention. A little envy, left alone. A small lie, tolerated. A craving, justified. Before long, a soul becomes chained to what it once played with.
So, prune your heart daily. Ask hard questions: Why am I drawn to this? Who gets hurt by this desire? Where is God in this? Prayer and truth-telling before God help us weed the garden of the soul.
God is still good. He doesn’t condemn our weakness but calls us into deeper honesty. Evil has no future. God does. His goodness is not loud but it lasts.
Choose Him. Again and again.
