Reflection:

There is nothing sentimental about Jesus’ message in today’s Gospel. It stings. It separates. It asks for a decision.

The Prince of Peace speaks about division, not because He loves conflict, but because truth will often cause it. When we commit ourselves fully to God, some relationships will strain. Our comfort zones may collapse. Even family expectations may clash with gospel convictions.

The First Reading introduces us to a Pharaoh who “knew not Joseph,” and who, out of fear, oppresses God’s people. Like the Israelites in Egypt, we may find ourselves in environments that are hostile to God’s purposes. Discipleship, then, demands discernment: Who or what in my life has become a Pharaoh? Where am I bound? Who is calling the shots—God or fear?

Jesus is not asking us to abandon love for our families. He’s asking us to love Him more. Because only in Him do we find the courage to stand firm when human approval fades.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Give me the grace to put You first.
Help me to recognize and remove anything that dishonours You.
Teach me how to love others without compromising Your truth.
Even when it hurts, help me stay faithful.
Amen.
