Reflection: Pentecost Sunday – Year C
Today, the Church throughout the world lifts its voice in one of the most ancient and heartfelt invocations of the liturgy:
“Come, Holy Spirit, Father of the poor; come, Giver of God’s gifts.”
Pentecost is not only the birthday of the Church—it is a summons to deep interior renewal. The Spirit did not descend on perfect people but on a fearful, waiting group of apostles. They were unsure, locked in, and still processing their wounds and confusion.
As we pray “Come, Holy Spirit,” the invitation is not abstract. It is personal. What kind of poverty—spiritual, emotional, moral—do you carry today? What part of your life hides in the shadows, avoiding grace?
Today’s Gospel reminds us that the Spirit is our Advocate, our Reminder, and our Teacher. He brings clarity in confusion, power in weakness, and light in every dark place. Pentecost is not only a feast of tongues of fire; it is a feast of hearts laid bare and made new.
This Pentecost, open the doors. Ask the Spirit to breathe again upon the “upper room” of your soul. Come, Most Blessed Light.
🙏🏽
Prayer
Come, Holy Spirit,
Father of the poor,
Giver of life,
Shine your healing light into every corner of my soul.
Set me free where I am bound.
Fill me where I am empty.
Make me bold in love and faithful in truth.
Amen.
