Reflection: Finding Rest in Christ – An Invitation to the Weary

In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks some of His most tender words:
“Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”
This is not an abstract promise—it is a personal invitation. Jesus doesn’t call the powerful or the perfect. He calls the tired, the worn out, the anxious, the ones who’ve been quietly holding it all together.

So many of us live exhausted. Physically drained. Emotionally frayed. Spiritually disconnected. The pace of the world can feel brutal. Expectations pile up. Burdens increase. And in the midst of all this, Jesus shows us a different way. Not a life free of responsibility—but a life rooted in peace, carried in love, and guided by grace.

The First Reading from Exodus reminds us of a similar call. God reveals His name to Moses and commissions him to go back to Egypt. Moses, like many of us, feels inadequate and unsure. But God promises His presence: “I will be with you.” That’s what makes the difference—not our strength, but His nearness.

Fr. Jude Obiora, C.S.Sp, beautifully captures this in today’s reflection:
“Jesus calls the weary, not the strong, offering rest and comfort; not burden. He invites humble, surrendered hearts to receive His peace in their weariness.”

When was the last time you truly rested—not just slept, but rested in your soul? When did you last stop trying to impress God and simply be with Him?

Jesus’ yoke is easy, not because life becomes easy, but because He shares the weight. His rest doesn’t mean escape from reality—it means strength to carry it with peace. You don’t need to fix yourself first. You don’t need to be enough. Just come.

This is the heart of the Gospel. This is the heart of God.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
I am tired.
You know the weight I carry—inside and out.
I bring it all to You today.
Help me stop pretending.
Help me rest, not only in body, but in heart.
Teach me how to receive Your peace.
Amen.
