Reflection:

There’s a haunting question behind today’s Scriptures: What are you living for—and is it enough?

We often believe that more money, more property, or more comfort will fill the gnawing emptiness in our hearts. But Ecclesiastes tells us something deeply uncomfortable: “Vanity of vanities. All is vanity.” The writer had seen the rise and fall of empires, the toil of men who built legacies, and the restlessness of souls chasing wind. In all of it, he found nothing that truly satisfied.

In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about a rich man who built bigger barns, stored more grain, and finally told himself, “Now you can rest.” But before morning came, his life ended. And all his stored riches? Useless. His mistake was not in having wealth—it was in thinking wealth could give his soul rest.

This is the silent hunger many carry:

  • The anxiety of not having enough.

  • The constant comparison that steals peace.

  • The illusion that our worth is tied to what we own.

St. Paul reminds us in Colossians to “set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” That’s not a call to ignore your responsibilities—but a call to remember what matters most. Detachment is not about refusing blessings—it’s about refusing to be enslaved by them.

So how do we live free?

  • Thank God daily for what you have.

  • Give away something that’s hard to part with.

  • Stop linking your self-worth to your possessions or position.

  • Create space to desire God more than gain.

Happiness is not found in abundance. It is found in simplicity, in surrender, and in Christ.

If God has blessed you, rejoice—but don’t forget: you are more than your salary, your savings, or your success. You are a soul made for something eternal.
