Reflection – Our Power Comes from the One Who Sends Us
In a world that demands self-promotion and control, Jesus calls us to something very different: mission rooted in humility and dependence.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus summons His disciples and gives them authority—not to build personal empires, but to serve, heal, cast out, and proclaim the nearness of the Kingdom. Their authority is not earned. It is received. It flows from the One who sends them.
The First Reading shows Joseph, entrusted with leadership during famine, not because of ambition, but because of God’s hand upon him. Joseph’s mission is not his own—it is for the saving of many lives.
Fr. Bruno Ihekaozor, C.S.Sp, puts it plainly:
“As Christians, we do not face the world alone. Our power and authority come from the Lord who has sent us. Therefore, our message and deeds should be of the Lord and not our own.”
That is both freeing and challenging. It frees us from proving ourselves—but it calls us to fidelity. To be messengers, not originators. Instruments, not owners.
Today, ask yourself:
Is my ministry about Him or about me?
Are my words aligned with His truth or my opinion?
Am I serving in His strength or mine?
🙏🏽
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
You have called me. You have sent me.
Let me never forget where my power comes from.
Keep me humble in mission.
Let my life point to You—not to myself.
Give me courage to act,
but wisdom to act in Your name, not my own.
Amen.
